"The New Protectionism" Where does it come from? And where may it go?

The new US government’s denouncement of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, as well as a new stance regarding NAFTA and TTIP marks a radical change of vision regarding foreign trade. In EU member states national economic concerns are on the rise too, but EU rules stipulate a free trade order. For the past 70 years trade without obstacles has been the dominant paradigm even if control was accepted in areas related to national security (ie. defence industry or telecoms) and currency fluctuations. Why do we see this questioning of the multilateral architecture of the international policy arrangements around trade and finance? Is a radical new approach coming into being?
